The Foundation program consists of the beginning studio and art history classes required of all art majors. They introduce art students to the basic skills, concepts, and working methods of art and art history. These classes are prerequisites for most advanced art classes and should be taken in the freshman and sophomore years. The studio classes cover basic drawing and design and should be taken in the first year. Art 112: Drawing I and Art 113: Drawing II focus on descriptive drawing from direct observation using still life, landscape, perspective, and the figure as subjects. Art 122: 2-Dimentional Design and Color and Art 132: 3-Dimentional Design introduce basic design concepts and theory in 2D and 3D art forms, including the proper use of tools and materials. The art history classes are an introduction to the history of art through a 2-part survey, Art 218: Art History I and Art 219: Art History II. These classes should be taken in the second year with other 200-level art classes in studio. Art majors must earn a letter grade of C or better in the foundation studio classes to continue in the major. Students interested in an art minor are required to take at least three of the foundation classes, Art 112, Art 122 or 132, and Art 219. Each year the department sponsors Annual Juried Foundation Exhibition with an invited guest artist to judge admissions and give cash awards.
